Speakers call for unity, cultural preservation on Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Prominent voices from Manipur’s indigenous community on Saturday called for unity, preservation of cultural heritage, and adaptation to modern challenges during the observance of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) Auditorium, Palace Gate, Imphal. The programme was organised by Yelhoumee Phurup in association with MSFDS under the global theme “Indigenous Peoples and Artificial Intelligence: Defending Rights, Shaping Future” and the local theme “Unity through Cultural Confluence & Shared Progress.”

Mutua Bahadur cautioned that much of Manipur’s intangible heritage is endangered and appealed to the government for immediate support. Binalakshmi Nepram stressed that “every indigenous person matters” and warned that “80% of wars today occur in biodiversity hotspots where indigenous people reside,” urging vigilance and solidarity. Guru Rewben observed that indigenous people are simple and sincere by nature, adding that sincere focus on progress will naturally lead to peace.

Ch. Lamjachao reminded that though indigenous groups in Manipur have diversified into various tribes and faiths, they share a common origin and must unite to safeguard their history, culture, and traditions. Dr. Koningthung underscored the need to balance western education with indigenous knowledge rooted in community values.
